Park Ranger Comforts A Sad Gorilla That Just Lost Its Mother To Poachers

A painful photo has sprung up on social media showing a park ranger cheering a gorilla that lost its mother to poachers.

Patrick Karabaranga, a ranger at the Virunga National Park in eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo, sits with a heartbroken orphaned gorilla in the park’s gorilla reservation. The bond between them is really amazing and the gorilla shows his gratitude for the ranger’s kindness by placing his hand on the ranger’s leg.

Like other gorillas living in the sanctuary, this gorilla lost his mother to the poachers, or as a result of prohibited traffickers smuggling them out of the park.

With over 200 mountain gorillas, Virunga National Park accounts for around a quarter of the  mountain gorilla population on Earth.
