Warsaw Zoo Will Give Marijuana To Elephants To Reduce Their Stress

 

A zoo in Poland is planning to start giving medical marijuana to its elephants in a proposal to aid reduce their stress levels.

 

Warsaw Zoo will administer liquid does of CBD oil to three of the elephants, right into their mouths or via their food, to see if it has the same exact relaxing effects testified by human use.

 

The cannabinoid has earlier been used to effectively treat dogs and horses in other parts of the world, though, Dr Agnieszka Czujkowska, who is leading up the project, thinks that it could be the ‘first initiative of its kind for elephants.’

 

‘We are preparing to give them the CBD and measure the cortisol. This is the whole experiment. Then we know [the oil] is either working or not,’ she told BBC News.

 

The CBD oil is resultant of a cannabis plant, but it doesn’t generate the ‘high’ euphoric result caused by smoking or ingesting the plant. Dr Czujkowska further added that the oil will not have any harmful side effects on the animals.
