This image of the Lunar Module was captured by Michael Collins. It contains Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin and of course the Earth in the Background of the picture. This image was taken in the course of the Apollo 11 mission, and it marks him (Michael Collins) the only person to have ever lived who was not inside this photograph.
Every human that ever existed to the instant in time that this portrait was taken, still lives, in some certain form that is. Every person that was born after that is also in this image, again in some form. Even if you were not born at that time, the matter from which you exist right now is in this picture. Because Matter cannot be destroyed nor created.
Michael Collins, in his last mission, worked as the commanding module pilot for the Apollo 11 mission. As Buzz Aldrin and Neil Armstrong were the first to perform a manned touchdown on the surface of the moon, command module pilot waited in the module for more than 21 hours (Earth hours) for their return.
When the command module lost all of its communications with the Earth when drifted behind the moon, he wrote:
“This venture has been structured for three men, and I consider my third to be as necessary as either of the other two. I don’t mean to deny a feeling of solitude. It is there, reinforced by the fact that radio contact with the Earth abruptly cuts off at the instant I disappear behind the moon, I am alone now, truly alone, and absolutely isolated from any known life. I am it. If a count were taken, the score would be three billion plus two over on the other side of the moon, and one plus God knows what on this side.”
The Guardian talked to Collins in 2009, and he revealed to be nervous about Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin’s protection. Fearing that in the situation of any disaster or calamity he would have to return to Earth on his own. Being the only survivor of a disastrous mission, he would be considered as “a marked man for life”.
Fortunately, the Apollo 11 mission was a complete victory, and each person returned to earth safely.
